Darkroom opens at a Southern California shopping mall where a man has been murdered in broad daylight, and Pete, a police photographer, is called in to take a picture of the corpse. Later, Pete is given the tedious job of looking at the videotapes for suspicious persons having contact with the victim in the weeks preceding the murder. The tapes reveal an argument between the victim and Layla Fallon, a girlfriend of the well-known nightclub owner Eddie Raymond. Pete is ambitious to advance and therefore doesn't tell his boss, Lt. Waters, of his discovery. Instead, he investigates on his own going to the bank, visiting both Eddie Raymond and Layla Fallon. When Pete accuses Layla of murder, she is brought in for questioning and found to have a legitimate alibi. That night Pete is called in to photograph another corpse-Lt. Waters. Pete and Eveline, an eccentric but attractive woman, become romantically involved after they meet in the park and he accidentally breaks her camera. Later, Pete is shocked when he discovers Eveline on one of the videotapes. From then on, Pete finds himself at the wheel of this mystery rolling out-of-control as it races downhill to a bizarre ending.
