For a moment I saw the way in front of me clearly, a trash bin to the left and empty pallets to the right. Then it was gone, plunging into darkness as I wrapped my hand around my pistol, my finger itching for a target. I stepped up against the wall to hide my profile while my eyes adjusted to the lower level of light. I wouldn't have been able to see at all if there hadn't been a dim light halfway down the alley. Keeping my pistol up, I used my shoulder to wipe away the rainwater from my face. My instincts told me to flee, but I ignored them, knowing it was my paranoia doing the talking. I shuffled forward, not caring that I went through a puddle as cold water seeped into my shoes. They were soaked anyway; I didn't feel a difference. I could see through the pallets and was certain Gary wasn't hiding there. I was shortly on the other side of the trash bin and cleared that as well. Where had the man gone? I wondered.
