The Works of Benedetto and Alessandro Marcello

The Venetian composer Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) was pre-eminently important in reshaping both musical thought and musical practice to suit values revived from classical antiquity. His music was widely known and respected throughtout the 18th and 19th centuries. This is a systematic inventory of the 700 musical works attributed to him. The catalogue also lists the works of the composer's brother Alessandro (1668-1747) and other information about the literary and musical achievements of the Marcello family. The book includes an extended commentary on the composers and their music which is the first in English and the most complete in any language. Numerous appendices and indices facilitate access to information of interest to performers, editors, librarians and scholars pursuing style-critical and source-critical studies.
