The Long Division: How the Politics of Education Became Partisan examines how elementary and secondary education in the United States became increasingly organized around political partisanship and why this shift matters for American democracy and public schooling. It argues that K-12 education politics did not suddenly polarize in response to new issues or divisive leaders. Instead, it gradually came to mirror long-term transformations in American politics and school governance, as the major parties realigned ideologically and demographically in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement and as education policymaking moved into more overtly partisan institutional arenas.

Drawing on political science, historical scholarship, and education studies as well as original survey research, survey experiments, and policy analysis, the book traces how K-12 education lost much of its institutional insulation from national politics, how public opinion on education issues increasingly sorted along party lines, and how an elite school reform coalition tempered partisan conflict for many years before breaking apart. It shows that rising partisan conflict has coincided with declining federal legislative capacity and growing state-level policy divergence, producing distinct red-state and blue-state models of education policy, particularly in school finance, private-school choice, and classroom instruction related to race and gender. The book also identifies important limits to partisan polarization, highlighting issues that continue to attract cross-party agreement and institutional mechanisms that could help manage the conflict that remains.

The conclusion argues that sustaining American public education requires assembling broad political coalitions around shared goals when possible, rethinking K-12 governance to situate decision-making authority where durable agreement is achievable, and knowing when conflict—even along party lines—is not only necessary but good.
