and the rustic room falls away,
and the sounds cease to carry,
the patrons change to shadows,
and the light shines on truth,
the aged wood walls listen
while sweet molasses steam pulls back in,
and I am old, old in a moment,
framed in time and stuck to the leather bench
marking the day I sat down to say goodbye
to you.
And in quiet mind, I wonder.
How does time trade passion
for passage, and the journey
for a mere view?
The heavy doors open,
a couple enters to place their order,
a family exits with a bag of what's left.
'History creates expectation,'
you say to me, your voluntary mother
offering involuntary farewell,
