If Harry Case sensed the dangers he would face when he accepted the challenge of locating Bernard Biggs' goddaughter, he might well have declined. As it was, he agreed to travel to the state of Vermont, in New England, and begin his inquiries in the small town of Milford, near the Culinary Institute where his employer's goddaughter, Clara, was enrolled.

A wicked turn of events finds Harry a prisoner in Lovingdale Manor, a crumbling estate secretly purchased by Biggs and recently usurped by one Roger Perry. Roger, a psychopath and Biggs' former cohort in crime, is now bent on exacting revenge on Biggs and family for a ruthless betrayal that landed Roger in an institution for the criminally insane.

Malevolent spirits of the estate's former occupants, evoked by Roger's presense and New England's merciless weather patterns, serve up a chilling and supernatural cauldron of terror and suspense that only the most resourceful can survive.
