On Monday, July 12, Tom started feeling sick with a high fever, headache, etc. It seemed like a bad case of the "flu." But, on Tuesday morning he woke up with a burning pain in his right thigh just above the knee. He said it felt like he'd "torn a muscle." By evening it was much worse. That night he never slept. Early Wednesday morning, writhing in pain, he called the doctor and we went into the emergency room. Although it took hours to diagnose the problem, when we arrived, he was already in renal failure and his blood pressure was dropping dangerously low. Finally at 5:00 at night he was rushed into surgery which confirmed the final diagnosis of "necrotizing fasciitis" (flesh-eating bacteria). Life as we had known it would never be the same
