Here is an award winning, satirical biography of a fictitious young man whose life is exposed through episode after hilarious episode from his birth through his 1890s prep-school years. Born and bred in New England, Dorian Faustus makes a Faustian contract to acquire advantages in love and at the gaming table. However, an over-strict conscience is our protagonists main enemy. The author has taken well recognizable literary characters and situations as points of departure to add humor and whimsy to the work. As a delightful subplot, he also has the stuffy, self-serving prep-school administration advance some recognizable, (and the author thinks silly), initiates from more modern times. As one might expect, none of these are successful at the school. This is a strange, funny, and often brilliant book. Awarded Honorable Mention in Mainstream/Fiction class.
