This novel is comprised of two sections. The first of these is a collection of stories and vignettes that tell the tales of a group of people drawn together by devises similar to fate. This group includes a business woman, two homeless men, a writer and a young boy who is involved with a street gang. Through the novel they are confronted with issues ranging from class divisions and homelessness to spiritual crisis and religious contradictions. Their stories conclude in a chapter set beneath the rays of an afternoon sun.
During the second section, one of the characters (the writer) takes to the road, travelling west to air out his thoughts regarding the themes of the first section.
