The tiny village of Skibbereen suffered more than any other in Ireland from starvation, poverty and disease and yet the youngest of the Casey clan managed to escape the horror of everyday Irish life. His decision to leave his beloved Ireland and his loving family caused immense suffering, knowing his mere survival rests on that decision. Dockside, gazing at the wondrous vessel that would take him from disease and poverty to a life of freedom in a city where gold lay in the streets he felt as though his entire body was being torn into pieces and scattered into the great sea he was about to cross.
