L Guerin Cameron
This series of short stories with a distinctly Caribbean flavor, explores aspects of life in a family in Trinidad in the 1960s. It recounts delightfully funny, poignant, inspiring, nostalgic events about the people in the family?s intimate circle as well as those on the periphery of their lives. The foundation of the book rests on the family?s relationships and values, but reaches beyond to draw attention to the superficial values imposed by colonialism and the inculcation of these values by persons to whom they were not relevant. This book bears a similarity to Miguel Street, (one of the earlier works of the prolific Trinidad born VS Naipaul) which is also a collection of stories about the simple but colorful lives of characters on a street in Port of Spain. Also in both books, the stories are narrated by young children who mature during the narration of the stories. The stories evoke nostalgia in readers of similar backgrounds and pique the interest of others.
