The novel is set in Karrana, a fictional town in the north of New South Wales. Bridie O'Toole from a dairy farm is at a victory dance to celebrate the end of World War Two in the Pacific. There she meets Will Featherstone from the opposite, well-heeled, side of the Karrana River. They fall passionately in love and a pregnancy ensues, forcing them to get married in Sydney. Her search for real fulfillment takes on special urgency after an accident shakes her to the core, and threatens the future of her growing family. This is a 'Coming of Age' novel from a historical perspective.
