This book combines a thorough analysis of the political, religious, and social thought of a modern Arab country from 1884 to 1952. It provides an account of its political and social evolution over a long period of time. Egypt's search for a secure place in the modern world is the subject of Mr. Safran's study, but many of her problems are common to her sister Arab and Muslim cou8ntries and, by extension, to all newly developing countries. Mr. Safran combines the approach of the "Islamist," who is immersed in the particular tradition and culture of the society he examines, with that of the modern social scientist, who brings to his subject the insight gained from the study of other societies. He has arranged his study in five parts: modern historical evolution versus the traditional belief system, main trends of ideological evolution, the triumph of the Liberal Nationalist Movement, the progress and decline of Liberal Nationalism, and the threat of traditionalist reaction. He interprets the root causes of the instability and violence that have characterized the recent internal life of Egypt and other Arab countries, and gives the grounds for their ambivalent attitude toward the West and Western culture.
