From Surreal Cortex: The Gyroscape is my way of thinking about the universal matrix of motion, powered by the momentum of intersecting vectors in dynamic equilibrium states. This particular pattern appears to be inherent in all processes, mirrored in each phase of animation within space and time. The following lyrics are largely hymns to this harmony, the source and force of life itself.
The occupations and preoccupations of the theoretical scientist and the literary artist overlap in this contemplation of being and becoming. The key difference is that scientists are responsible for the verifiability of their findings, whereas writers are responsible for the veracity of them.
Rhythms of respiration, infusion and exhalation, the circulation of new and old blood, beat by the pulsing pump at the heart of physical embodiment, depict an ongoing event on which every cell depends. So it is with the breath of fresh perspectives; the flow must go on.
Language serves as a conduit for the transfer of consciousness. Speech is directed breath, the sharing of selected thoughts converted into sounds, integrated into the immediate reaction of our neighbors. Dynamic and largely lost in the instant, such words fade fast, and are therefore cheap, unless they are recorded and preserved.
More rarely, guided hands tap out coded thoughts, launching them in a state of suspended animation, to be received and interpreted at a later date by a wide variety of eyes. Such projected communication may be called scripture, history, or literature, but in any case represents a bridge to distant minds separated by chronology and location.
Sometimes, a work of writing is brought to the stage, reborn as a repeating element of speech or song. Live music on stage is a type of theater, a model of consciousness, melodic stories flowing through energetic circuits and dispersing to those in attendance. At the end of the night, the songs belong to the audience.
Which brings us to the present moment, a convergence of experience between us, you and I, which is being initiated as I type this self-referential sentence, and becoming consummated by your reading of it at some future point.
This page is manifesting now, but the day and date assigned to this particular instant will markedly differ for each of us. Books are time machines, linking us across the ages.
These are messages in a bottle, on a strange path toward musical adaptation, hurtling toward you from my little desert isle into an ocean of unknown currents. I do not know the destinations of these carefully selected words, but I trust they will wash up wherever you are, whoever you may be, and whenever your version of now happens to pass.
