Contributor Bio:  Gerson, Mary-Joan Gerson grew up on the ethnically diverse Lower East Side of New York City, attended Cornell University, and later earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from New York University, where she now directs family therapy training. She has made many trips to the cultural centers of Mexico.
