Author Viola Davis originally wrote the book for her doctoral thesis at the University of the West Indies. This is Davis' second book on Caribbean literature. Her first, "The Creative Use of Schizophrenia in Caribbean Writing" examine the works of Walcott, VS Naipaul, Wilson Harris and Edward "Kamau" Brathwaite.
