A biographical literary criticism and history of Eugene Field, who was known in the late 1800s and early 1900s as the Children's Poet and the Poet of Childhood, and how he came to write his best-loved poems, "Little Boy Blue," "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod" (also called "The Dutch Lullaby"), and "The Duel" (also called "The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat"), which are also included in the text. This book includes notes, glossary, and annotated bibliography.  The Doorstep Orphan received a 2012 Gold MOONBEAM national/international Book Award in the category of Children's Poetry but is also loved by senior citizens, a 2013 Nebraska Press Women's 1st Place Book Award, and a 2013 National Federation of Press Women's national 2nd Place Book Award.
