The Alexander family were taken hostage November 1997 by Taiwan's most-wanted criminal, Chen Chin-hsing, a murderous desperado. South African diplomat Mac Alexander, his wife, two daughters, and a foster baby were held at gunpoint, used as human shields in shoot-outs with the police, and two of them were wounded in the crossfire. Demanding justice for his imprisoned wife, Chen threatened to commit suicide once his mission was accomplished.
