About The Rock and the Kangaroos Big Jim Green and Rock Riley leave Ferguson, Oklahoma in August of 1959 for Baker College in Douglas, Texas, totally confident about the surroundings they are leaving and totally unsure about the setting they are entering. They find they have as much to give their new environment, as it has to give them. Through creative adventures, the Rock's intellect and wit, and a basketball team that approaches greatness, bonds of friendship and perceptions of life are formed. A constant conflict between Rock having a precise plan for life and Big Jim not caring about anything beyond the next basketball game, weaves its way through the story. The Rock tries to encourage Big Jim to come up with a plan that will allow him to "give back" his greatest talents as Big Jim resists his efforts with a carefree attitude that mostly involves playing ball and dating rich girls.
