The Emperor of Carysfort Reef is a tale about vampires, but also a story of pursuit, murder, secrets, and mystery; about people, and relationship. Its story weaves in and out of the tapestry of the history and myths of Western Civilization, from the far reaches of Alexander the Great's empire in what is now Afghanistan to the Roman provinces of Syria and Egypt; to pursuit through Eastern Europe, to medieval Scotland, and then to the modern era when the secret is uncovered in a ship wreck of a vessel that had mysteriously exploded and sank in 1659 during a hurricane discovered on Carysfort Reef off Key Largo, Florida. It is a story of the awakening of an ancient vampire, his entry into the 21st century to its technological marvels, and potential for unleashing an evil power unknown in this comfortable age of man; a world where emperors are things of the past, and vampires are only entertainment. It is also a story of a pursuit through time by one vampire chasing another, one sworn to kill the other or die trying. The Emperor of Carysfort Reef opens to us the possibilities of what may have been. There are stories that go unwritten, stories often too terrible or disturbing to qualify for inclusion within the canon of history. There are also custodians of secrets who protect us from stories about phenomena inhabiting the ambiguous world between truth and myth. One such story is about the life and times of three vampires. The first is the founder of the vampire kind on Earth. He is a recluse and chooses not to challenge or engage humankind while the ages of man ebb and flow; choosing rather to just outlive them in anonymity, in the shadows of his remote and guarded sanctuary. The second creature was made a vampire when the first needed a powerful political ally during the first age of man?s domination of Earth. So too, in the weakness brought on by loneliness, he also made him for a companion for his journey of tens of centuries. As opposed to his maker, during the second age of man?s domination this second creature joined with man and the powerful army of Imperial Rome, fine-tuning and demonstrating his blood lust and appetite for power; joining them in their efforts for domination of the world known to them. Over the ages and under many names he became known for his cruelty and disregard for anyone that got in his way. His goals were simple: Satisfy all his desires and depraved appetites at any cost, to anyone. The third, a physician and scientist was made a vampire by the second. But this creature overcame the latent natural human frailty of succumbing to the new powers gifted him as a vampire. Given the capacity to amass untold wealth he did not exploit it for self-gain or power as did the second. Thinking himself an abomination, he sought a cure for himself and others of his kind. He eventually took on the role of a vampire hunter and, if need be, a slayer. Made a vampire in the second century AD the third has pursued his cruel maker for over nearly 2 ½ millennia across the Roman Empire, to Britain, then to Florida where, at last, his quest will finally come to an end.
