"I was born in Livingston County, N. Y., July 5, 1827. My parents both died before I was eight years old. I found a home with a cousin in St. Lawrence county. I think my cousin was a good man; but, unfortunately for me, I soon fell into disfavor with his wife, who seemed to improve every opportunity to make my life unpleasant. Two incidents will be sufficient to indicate something of the means to which she resorted."
