The process of mummification began in ancient Egypt when the egyptians discovered that their bodies decomposed in coffins and would need to be preserved. They began the process of mummification, removing the internal organs and drying the body. After the mummification process was completed, the body was placed into a stone coffin known as a sarcophagus. The body was covered with linen or shrouds, and special oils were applied to preserve its appearance.
