I don't enjoy travelogues. I skim through the books and fall asleep during the slide shows. But Gary Zacny's Travel Light: Light-Hearted and Enlightening Travel is unlike any travelogue I have ever picked up. The author exposes the breadth of his reading and that he-unlike many of us-remembers what he has read. In this volume, Zacny writes about his travels in Egypt, Greece, and Rome (and other parts of Italy) where he visits the classic wonders, and other more obscure gems, and helps us see them through his unique eye. Yes, he writes about the Sphinx, the Acropolis, and the Coliseum, but he also writes about the Palace of Knossos, the Boat of Cheops, and the laundry in Pompeii. In describing all the stops, Zacny draws on the remarkable store of information he has amassed in his nearly 75 years of life, and he makes the reader the beneficiary of his knowledge. He also spares none of the attractions his distinctive light-hearted-and sometimes biting-humor. I finally found a travelogue I couldn't put down until I read every page.
