On two successive weekends in the Fall of 1875, Catholic processions through the streets of Toronto were attacked by Protestants with fists, stones, and even gunfire. They would be the largest riots in Toronto's history, yet today they are virtually forgotten. During the week between the two riots, it was hotly debated in City Hall, in Orange Lodges, in public and in the newspapers whether or not the processions should be permitted, whether or not the police would be able to protect them, and, lastly, just who was in charge of the streets of the city?
