Stumbling down an abandoned trail, Wren and Kyle Makepeace hastily make their way back to civilization after an extraordinary hike into the Smokey Mountains where they have encountered an unknown community of Elders living in Lovada Cove. They are now being Sent back to Laurel Springs, to deliver sad news to one family and assistance to an intangible network of goodness sustained by the Elders. They themselves have been through a traumatic series of experiences which has transfigured their ideals and sense of purpose. Now it is their turn to assist in transforming other lives, most specifically by healing the prejudices which are causing a culture clash between the local mountain folks and the Hispanic workers slowly moving into remote Blackburne County. Progress appears to be made until a fatal fire breaks out among the cabins of the Hispanic community which challenges good-will on both sides.
