More importantly, being captain of your ship, ranks high too. You are self sufficient, and the slow progress of the boat allows you to tune out stress. The slowly meandering in a beautiful countryside aids to that feeling, as does pulling up to a canal pub for a pub lunch or dinner and quaffing copious quantities of fine ale being the other. Mindful of the fact that being drunk in charge is not a good thing, its actually illegal. Then there are the locks to cope with, hard work but not difficult, and there you are travelling again. Take in the sights and smells all around you, and cruise all day and cover a few miles, but you did it, you achieved. And at the end of your holiday, you will be fitter and your mind will be fitter too. So fit, that you will be planning your next canal boat holiday on the drive home. Some canal facts: In England there are a total of 2,200 miles of canals with 1569 locks, 53 tunnels, 3112 bridges, 37 aqueducts and 74 reservoirs. The canal with the most locks is Caen on the Kennet and Avon Canal with 29. The average depth of a canal is about 1.5 metres and three types of boats can use them, Boats, Narrow Boats and Wide Beam boats (that are restricted to just a few canal systems). I suspect you will be on a narrow boat! The longest is the Grand Union Canal which goes from London to Birmingham and is 137 miles long, it would take 72 hours to traverse.
