Based on a possible true-life story amid actual events that shaped the course of global history, A Success Denied traces the steps of a Scottish journalist-turned-hero of both World Wars, between which he becomes immersed in China's looming civil war and fathers a Eurasian child who disappears during their attempt to flee the destruction of Shanghai by invading Japanese forces. Spurred by all-consuming speculation as to the youngster's fate, the search for him leads to final revelations in South Africa, where the boy's Scottish grandfather had fought during the Anglo-Boer War.
