My relation to this volume is a very subordinate one. I suggested its preparation and I liave revised the second Essay in the series throughout and the others in part. Shortly after the celebration of the bicentenary of Spinoza sdeaths and the unveiling of the statue in memory of him at the Hague it occurred to me that an English version of these Essays would be a useful addition to our minor philosophical literature the literature that is expository and critical rather than original and creative. The appearance of Mr. Frederick Pollock sadmirable work on Spinoza and of other English monographs has added fresh interest to the subject; while the announcement of two forthcoming books on the Dutch philosopher has extended it still further. The Essay by Kuno Fischer which contains an excellent summary of the life of Spinoza and a discriminating estimate of his character was translated some time ago by Miss Frida Schmidt Beinwasser Pommem. The Dutch Essays by Land and Van Yloten occasioned by the bicentenary celebration of the death of Spinoza on the 21st February, 1877, and the unveiling of his statue at the Hague, on the 18th of September, 1880 were more recently translated by the Rev.
