The authors of this little book have been for years engaged in the work of the Sunday school as teachers and officers, and for almost as long time have been occupied as biblical instructors, training young men for the Christian ministry. For a number of years we have also had a share in the editorial conduct of the Biblical World, a journal devoted to the promotion and improvement of biblical study, both private and in schools of various kinds. Portions of the following chapters appeared in their original form as editorials in the Biblical World. They are republished here in revised form, with the addition of several chapters not previously printed, in the hope that they may contribute somewhat to that further development and improvement of the Sunday school so imperatively demanded by its own splendid past and the widening horizon and better methods of biblical study. In particular it is hoped that they will be of service to the students for the ministry with whom we are associated in the Divinity School of the University of Chicago.
