Note WHEN last I printed a collection of papers which had been already exposed to the notice or indifference of my contemporaries, I was careful to apologise for so doing. But the critics took, for the most part, so kind and encouraging a view of the proceeding that now, si celeres quatiunt pennasj so to speak, if they think I go too far, I must say they have themselves to blame for my persistence. The Provincial Mind appeared in the Quarterly Review; The Times has allowed me to use material contributed to its literary supplement in the articles on Don Juan Sterne, and Fielding; I reprint a few short articles from the A cademyy and some lengthier efforts from the Fortnightly Review and the Pall Mall Magazine, G. S. S.
