Hijo del conde de Tendilla, gobernador de Granada tras la derrota rabe de 1492, y biznieto del marqu s de Santillana. Tuvo la oportunidad de visitar los centros culturales m s importantes de la poca, y conoci a Garcilaso de la Vega y a Juan Bosc n. Estudi en Granada y continu su formaci n en Salamanca, y despu s en Italia. Fue embajador en Inglaterra y Venecia, y en 1542 represent al emperador Carlos V en el Concilio de Trento. En 1547 fue nombrado embajador y capit n general de Siena, donde sofoc una rebeli n. M s tarde fue embajador en Roma. Ejerci adem s como consejero de Estado durante el reinado de Felipe II, pero fue desterrado al castillo de La Mota por una disputa con el duque de Leiva, y luego a Granada, donde particip en la guerra contra los rabes.
