Three volumes and part of the fourth, entitled 'Fragment of the fourth part of Dr. Higgins's Observations', were published between 1797 and 1803: the first in 1797, the second in 1800, the third in 1801 and the 'Fragment' in 1803. The 'Fragment', printed by Alexander Aikman and Son, carried an advertisement by them: "Dr. Higgins's intention was to have placed this description at the close of his Observations, which were to have been extended to a volume of considerable size .. These sheets are presente .. in their unfinished state, ..".
