Ayaan Suleiman is a young Yemeni immigrant living in Ottawa. She's working as a cleaner in an office building to pay for her studies at La Cite Collegiale. One night Ayaan meets a tall, dark and handsome but distraught man. Jean-Baptiste Vincent, a rookie Haitian-Canadian attorney who's suicidal after getting disowned by his parents due to his scandalous lifestyle. Ayaan stops his suicide attempt, and the two of them forge an unforgettable bond. In time, Ayaan and Jean's friendship turns into more.
