The brilliant William Whiston looked deeply into this issue but his ideas were rejected. But recently scholars such as Emmanuel Tov have come around to ideas which to the author appear to reflect those of the genius Whiston the translator of Josephus and the successor to Isaac Newton in the chair of Mathematics at Cambridge.
