Sarah Pemberton, a seventeen-year-old Quaker, and her extended family, have moved into their ancestral home in Bloomington, Indiana. Following an accident, Sarah awakens in the same house in the past and is confused about what has happened. She discovers a secret about the house that she never knew, and meets Ben, a fellow poet with an inspiring soul. Together they follow a hawk on a spiritual journey of self-discovery as they try to help runaway slaves find the freedom they may never get. A surprising parallel between past and present surfaces and leads Sarah to realize that Friends are the same no matter what year it is.
