Coming from a Different Place
Nancy Carney
Ona, an eastern career woman, leaves her comfortable but unexpectedly disquieting environment for a sabbatical on an inherited Midwestern farm. Her life''s order is interrupted by concern for her hired help, an orphaned teenager named Emma. Her desire to mentor and improve this girl''s life is thwarted by the largest landholder, B. G. Gretch, and his son, Bobby. B. G. loves his fiefdom which he has prepared for this only child, a college graduate. Bobby recognizes his father''s obsolescence yet still loves the man. At the same time, he understands Ona, a woman from a different place, and Emma, a girl he comes to love. B. G. will not accept the cracker Emma and threatens to shoot himself if his son''s relationship continues. The concluding actions are what every woman from any time, place, or culture will understand. However, they will only raise more questions for every man.
