The story of the third wave of Filipino immigrants completes the trilogy of books on the subject begun by Dr. Roberto Vallangca and carried on by his widow, Caridad. Mrs. Vallangca has spent a number of years interviewing third wave immigrants, whose stories of adjustment and struggle in America differ strikingly from those of the first and second waves. Unlike the first and second wave immigrants, who sought refuge from political turmoil in their home country, third wave immigrants tended to be highly-trained professionals (doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc.) seeking economic opportunity. In addition to oral histories, Mrs. Vallangca discusses historic and current American laws that have both helped and hindered Filipino immigration.
