When Tomorrow Comes
Eileen Frost
Portsmouth 1932. Harry Cartarett, his wife Esther and their five children are a typical working-class family of the times. The story follows their struggle to come to terms with the loss of a child, the demons haunting their eldest son and the possibility of a world war. Esther becomes friendly with neighbour Phyllis Martindale and the two women support each other through good and bad, including an infidelity that ends in disaster. Esther, an optimist always looking forward to tomorrow, cannot believe there will be a war but in 1939, when it is declared, her life and that of everyone else, changes forever, although even the Blitz cannot break her indomitable spirit.
