After the death of his mother Rob McGruder is driven from his home at a young age by his abusive father. As a young man he spends two years in prison, and when he returns to Tulsa he is plagued by the criminals he worked with in the past to break the law again. His fear of going back to jail drives him to find a better life. But his quest for a new life leads him to commit a crime against an innocent young woman, Paige Lewis, and her family. Paige, the daughter of a black Christian pastor and white mother is a psychology major at Tulsa University and is house and cat sitting for her brother and sister-in-law while they are in Europe. Rob makes mistakes during the robbery and his fear of being caught drives him to leave town. He must leave his sister, Myrna, the one person who cares the most about him, in an abusive marriage with a man over twenty years older than she is. Also left behind is Gerri, a woman in love with him whom he has used to satisfy his physical needs and who unknowingly gave him the information he needed to commit the crime. Rob finds the life he's been searching for in Las Vegas, Nevada. There he changes his name to Robert Martin and becomes the man he has always wanted to be. Much of his changes come because of his friendship with Rico Calderon, a Mexican national working in the states to help his large fatherless family in his country. One of the first things Rico tells him is to never take the easy way out because it always hurts someone. Rob realizes that has been the way he has lived his life. Through his friend he meets two families: the Aragons and the Taylors and because of them he admits to his desire to have a family of his own. Five years later he must return to Tulsa to help his sister. After the death of her husband she goes into depression and Rob is forced to remain with her. It is because of her illness that he comes face to face once more with Paige Lewis. He has changed his appearance so much that the woman doesn't recognize him bu
