Ashley Flemington, having been abandoned by her husband who went off tilting at windmills, was left to fend for herself and two small girls in Boston. After many years she received a notice from the government saying her husband, Daryll, had been killed in a political uprising in South America. His body had never been found. After the shock had worn off, she decided to get on with her life. After many years of dedicated duty, with her children grown and some financial assistance from a loving aunt, Ashley decides to retire early and returns to eastern Canada to connect with relatives and friends. Much to her surprise, she finds joy and love. Meanwhile, Daryll, who is not dead but a prisoner about to escape, is filled with an obsessive need to get back to his beloved Ashley, hearth and home. Never being one to look at the world as it really is, he is unable to find Ashley did not wait...and his hearth and home are no longer his. Thus begins his arduous "Journey to Ashley". His harrowing experiences along the way, test his endurance to the limit-ending with his final, dramatic meeting with a new an very different Ashley.
