Led by his Spirit Guide, a young half white/half Kaw finds himself signing on as a hired hand at a ranch in the midst of the Apache War. He must fight the prejudice of the other hands, and his own, as he carves a niche for himself -- at the ranch, in the nearby town, against the Apache, and among the local blacksmiths, who accept him as an official apprentice.
