The Best and the Worst of Times
Henri Schmit
This volume contains thirty (30) non-fiction stories. In the first story of Part I, the author pokes fun at a young woman who had her head shaved by members of the Resistance. This was the revenge reserved for women who had slept with Germans during the war. The first fourteen (14) pieces are about: Growing up in the Old Country. Included are: Stories about Patriots and cowardly Collaborators, accidental Death in the Boxing Ring, adventures in the Military Police, etc. The 12 stories in Part II are about: Encounters in Canada, i.e. Dying of Thirst in the Brewery, Quebec's ludicrous Language Laws, On becoming a Grandfather, Remembering Mordecai Richler, etc. The four pieces in Part III recount the author's return trip to Europe in December 2005. It includes a short stay in Paris, several weeks in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and a one day visit to Bastogne, Belgium, to see once more the famous war monument, The Mardasson.
