By 90 A. D. when Jesus gave Revelation to John, the church was filled with more than enough error and corruption to destroy it. Jesus told the apostles he would return as "The Spirit of Truth" but Paul, as he taught about the Messiah as a Jew, promoted a physical return of Jesus to destroy the believer's enemies. He was correct about the coming but wrong about the manner and time of the two comings of Jesus. Peter, in direct opposition to what Jesus taught him, used his apostolic authority to murder a man and his wife over money and then say Jesus did it. Sound familiar? The insertion of baptism, tongues and laying on of hands as instruments of salvation caused confusion which is prevalent today. The purpose, receipients and time of the events are all noted in the first verse of The Book of Revelation. When in a physical body Jesus taught in parables with words. Some would see only the physical object he described and thus remain ignorant of what he was trying to tell them. In Revelation the objects are seen and described by John and the reader will only see the truth if he sees past the object to the truth the object represents. As with his parables, the truth is found in the Scriptures and in the obvious situations of each generation. Revelation was not intended to be a crystal ball to tell the future. It was given to people in churches so they could identify the enemy without and within. Religion, Government and Commerce are identified as the common enemies of mankind. These forces, like Satan, rely upon knowledge which produces a "belief in God" but not a faith which causes a person to "believe God".
