Alec Suzuki is a middle school student living in New York. All his life Alec has been able to see ghosts and evil spirits and is plagued by them. Their unnatural attraction to him causes problems in his day to day life leading to his parents' divorce.

Alec is forced to leave New York and travel with his father to Tokyo, Japan where a new job awaits his father while a new school called Izanagi Academy awaits Alec.

Though there's more to this school than meets the eye and Alec soon discovers he's a Shinigami, or Exorcist and ends up using his powers to protect his new friends and school from supernatural threats such as yokai, Japanese demons.

In an effort to escape his ghost-filled reality Alec gets caught up in a popular virtual reality online game. Ironically, players capture ghosts and use them to battle eachother while trying to win the title of Ultimate Ghost Master.

But when the lines between the game and reality begin to blur Alec realizes he can't escape his destiny as a Shinigami...
