Finding his life tantamount to slavery on his brother's farm, Topilu joins a trading caravan to distant Scythia. There he falls in love and literally wagers his life to win the woman of his dreams. A fanatical prophet leads the Scythians to invade the Hittite kingdom. When the invasion fails, Topilu's tribe escapes its enemies by fleeing through a mystical tunnel. They find a new homeland, but Topilu must convince his leader and best friend that he is in danger of being assassinated, and that the future of their people is in jeopardy, as foretold by a legend he heard in his youth.
