One Man
Siaosi Tusitala
A crime novel based in sibling rivalry and force of wills during the 70's & mid- 80's. Bill is a returning Navy "Viet Nam Era" Veteran with an alcohol problem and a terrible attitude. His brother, Jerry, determines to influence and initiate Bill in becoming a functioning member of society once again. Jerry is an influential up and coming Banker on Wilshire Blvd. and has determined to assist his little brother in realizing his potential. Bill straightens out; but falls in love with and marries an Hispanic girl with a child which allienates Jerry; causing confrontation and setting the stage for a long conflict and a sad realization for Bill that spans nearly a decade. Corporate takeovers and organized criminal elements are orchestrated by Jerry in order to bring Bill to Jerry's viewpoint and attitude. Bill becomes more determined than ever to defy and confront his older brother. Both brother's lives spiral downward and culminate in a lopsided showdown. A very good story for any returning Veteran facing re acclamation to civilian society and business reality. Extremely applicable to current social, economic and racial attitudes. A gritty, no holds bared adventure story with aspects of love and traditional value pitted against "anything for success" viewpoints. A bit of a history lesson as well, concerning how we got here, from there.
