Adopted into the Mansfield family and inheriting the family's wealth under false circumstances, Ted Mansfield has been CEO of Mansfield Industries for twenty years. But that success, his relationship with his wife Marsha, and the love for his children isn't enough to ward off a midlife crisis. In a moment of weakness, Ted allows his illicit passion for his college sweetheart, Morgan Carnegie, to cloud his judgment. This indiscretion, however, is only the first in a series of calamitous events that drive him into periods of depression. He struggles through the cultural revolution of the 1960s, his own self-doubts, and threats from those close to him. As Ted is driven out of his comfortable and powerful position, he realizes that he must build healthy relationships with his wife, whom he has wronged, and his teenaged children, who are slowly drifting away as they reject the very establishment Ted holds dear. Ten years rush by as Ted desperately clings to his values while struggling to develop his social skills so he can emotionally survive in a rapidly changing social environment but also nurture his family.
