These letters reflect a contemporary view of issues people are afraid to touch. Dogood Goodman was an egalitarian. He had no biases. He treated everyone and everything with equal disdain. But inside that sarcastic shell of a man, I sensed a deep love for a higher humanity, a deeper morality. Dogood saw people stuck in their beliefs, stuck in their political views and sexuality and more. He wanted to shake them and get their minds unstuck. He wanted to shatter their frail bodies and make their spirits aware of the world outside themselves. And his language reflects that need to reach the divine even if it is vulgar. are afraid to touch.
