Aaron was just finishing the eighth grade and Becky was finishing the seventh when Mamma left with Hershel. I was going to start first grade in the fall. Aaron started looking for a lot of lawns to mow during that week before school was out and by the time he got his first five dollars for mowing Mr. Woodall's yard, we didn't have a thing in the house to eat except two cans of sauerkraut. It's hard to describe how relieved Becky and I were when Aaron came home with a sack of groceries. It was just a quart of milk, a can of oatmeal, a bag of beans and a sack of potatoes. Aaron was smart enough to stretch that lawn mowing money about as far as he could stretch it. "As soon as I can get a few more lawns, we'll buy some meat and bread." He said. "But we're going to have to live on beans and potatoes for a few days."
