Luke Martin is a Christian man living in Georgia in the late 1850s, and he is among the few Georgians in the area who have a strong aversion to slavery; he owns a few he has inherited, but he's not happy about it. Martin has no intention of buying slaves when he rides into the bustling town of Grantsville; he just needs a few supplies and a saddle repair. But despite his intentions, he finds himself paying $500 for a young boy named Joshua. Martin knows it's not right to own another human being, and he treats his slaves with dignity and respect. He's certain God has a plan. But Martin's neighbor, Tom Grant, openly disagrees with Martin's humane treatment of the slaves. A confrontation is near.
